چکیده

Several surfactant molecules self-assemble in solution to form long, flexible wormlike micelles which get entangled with each other, leading to viscoelastic gel phases. We discuss our recent work on the rheology of such a gel formed in the dilute aqueous solutions of a surfactant CTAT. In the linear rheology regime, the storage modulus G(ω) and loss modulus G(ω) have been measured over a wide frequency range. In the nonlinear regime, the shear stress σ shows a plateau as a function of the shear rate γ̇ above a certain cutoff shear rate γ̇c. Under controlled shear rate conditions in the plateau regime, the shear stress and the first normal stress difference show oscillatory time-dependence. The analysis of the measured time series of shear stress and normal stress has been done using several methods incorporating state space reconstruction by embedding of time delay vectors. The analysis shows the existence of a finite correlation dimension and a positive Lyapunov exponent, unambiguously implying that the dynamics of the observed mechanical instability can be described by that of a dynamical system with a strange attractor of dimension varying from 2.4 to 2.9.

Influence of binary surfactant mixtures on the rheology of associative polymer solutions.

Hydrophobically modified alkali-soluble emulsion polymers (HASE) are a class of comblike associative polymers that can impart high viscosities to aqueous solutions. The rheology of HASE solutions can be tuned by the addition of surfactants, such as nonylphenol ethoxylates (NP e), where e is the length of the hydrophilic (ethoxylate) chain. While previous studies have considered individual surfa...

The rheology and microstructure of branched micelles under shear

The rheology and shear-induced structures of a series of self-assembled surfactant worm-like micelles (WLMs) with varying levels of branching are measured using rheoand flow-small angle neutron scattering (SANS). The degree of branching in the mixed cationic/anionic surfactant (CTAT/SDBS) WLMs is controlled via the addition of the hydrotropic salt sodium tosylate and verified by cryo-TEM. The l...

Both protein adsorption and aggregation contribute to shear yielding and viscosity increase in protein solutions.

A combination of sensitive rotational rheometry and surface rheometry with a double-wall ring were used to identify the origins of the viscosity increase at low shear rates in protein solutions. The rheology of two high molecular weight proteins is discussed: Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) in a Phosphate Buffered Saline solution and an IgG1 monoclonal antibody (mAb) in a formulation buffer containi...

Microstructural Changes in SDS Micelles Induced by Hydrotropic Salt

The addition of low concentrations of the hydrotropic salt p-toluidine hydrochloride (PTHC) to solutions of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) promotes the transition from spherical to rodlike micelles. NMR measurements confirm that the hydrotrope adsorbs at the micelle-water interface, thereby screening electrostatic repulsions between the surfactant headgroups. The sphere-to-...

Effect of silica colloids on the rheology of viscoelastic gels formed by the surfactant cetyl trimethylammonium tosylate.

The effects of the addition of submicrometer-sized colloidal silica spheres on the linear and nonlinear rheology of semidilute solutions of a viscoelastic gel are studied. For a 1.4 wt% solution of the surfactant CTAT, a peak in the zero-shear rate viscosity eta(0) is observed at approximately equal weight percents of silica and CTAT. This peak shifts to lower silica concentrations on increasin...
